Following the massive success of our ‘Design the Best Classroom Ever’ competition, JBH Refurbishments has become an ambassador of the FIS iBuiltThis competition. Both initiatives share the desire to inspire and reward a passion for construction.
About Design The Best Classroom Ever
In the spring JBH Refurbishments launched Design the Best Classroom Ever in schools across the South East. The idea behind the competition was to inspire the next generation of interior designers, architects and builders. The response from schools and teachers in the region was phenomenal. The competition was used by teachers for art and computer lessons and was even set as homework.
FIS got involved too. Iain McIlwee, CEO of FIS helped judge the competition and selected two winners – one from key stage one and one key stage two. As a prize, JBH offered two £250 cash prizes to the winning pupil’s class. Florence Mannell, age 10 won the key stage two category for her classroom design with a secret library and Penny Bates, age 7 won the key stage one category for her Monopoly board inspired design.

About FIS iBuiltThis
Now the team at FIS are running their own competition called iBuiltThis, which is open to everyone with a passion for building, construction, fit out and interiors, including professional and students. To enter, you need to get creating. Build anything you like and be as creative as possible. It could be a model, a structure, building, digital design or drawing.
Simply take a picture of you and your creation and submit it online to the competition portal.
Here’s one we did earlier. Callum is posing with the glass partition wall installed in an office in London. Remember you must be in the picture and the project can be anything you have built.
For the younger ones, the entries can include play doh model, a sandcastle, a Lego creation, a paper mâché project, a cardboard box fort or a garden den. This is a great project that children, parents, school and colleges can get all involved with to install a fresh passion for creating in young people.
What is great about the iBuiltThis competition is that it spans every age group, with three categories that offer some amazing prizes to suit.
- Ages 13 and under, can win a family package to Legoland, Windsor with an overnight stay.
- Age 14 to 18-year olds have the chance to win an Apple iPhone XR (64gb).
- 19 and overs can win a trip for two adults to a Canopy & Stars exclusive property.
There is also a prize for the most engaged school or college, that submits the most entries. This is where JBH Refurbishments’ involvement will be crucial in promoting the competition to the schools that got involved in the Design the Best Classroom Ever competition.
How Schools can get Involved?
Similar to the JBH Design the Best Classroom Ever Competition, schools can use the iBuiltThis competition as an art lesson or set it as homework. With the summer holidays approaching it could be set as summer project ready to return in September with a photo of what you have built.
Pupils can enter direct to the FIS website with the permission of their parents and state the name of the school and teacher.
The school with the most entries will receive a bonus prize trophy for their school.
Why are JBH and FIS Teaming Up?
JBH Refurbishments provides office fit outs and refurbishments for commercial properties in London and across the South East. While FIS is the industry voice for the interior fit out sector.
The partnership was initiated when JBH Refurbishment – a FIS member – contacted the CEO, Ian McIlwee to be an honorary judge in the Design the Best Classroom Ever competition. It transpired that JBH and FIS shared a passion for inspiring the next generation to pursue careers within the construction sector.
Why is the next generation so important to JBH and FIS? Well, the UK construction industry is currently experiencing a distinct lack of skilled labour. By rolling out the design competitions in schools to get children thinking about building and designing in a methodical manor, JBH hopes it will have a positive impact on the future of the industry.
Many of JBH Refurbishments’ clients include schools, particularly during the summer months when the school refurbishment season is in full swing. This connection with schools gave JBH the upper hand in rolling out the classroom design competition, which was recognised by FIS. Having witnessed the success of the Design the Best Classroom Ever competition, FIS subsequently asked JBH to become ambassadors for their iBuiltThis competition.
