Hospital Records office refurbishment was a classic example of how companies are adapting their workspace to become Covid-Safe and cater for a new way of working. Read on to discover how JBH Refurbishments transformed the space with office partitioning and minor construction work.
Hospital Records is a long-established independent record label, specialising in drum and base music. Since the mid 90’s, Hospital Records has grown considerably and today the company is a renowned label in the UK’s music industry.
Based in South London, the company’s office has always been a creative hub for their employees and artists. It’s a place for recording music, producing their regular podcasts and broadcasting their radio show. However, the Covid-19 pandemic put the brakes on their face-to-face collaborations for more than 18 months.
The work-from-home culture, coupled with social distancing measures heavily impacted on the business activity. So did external changes to the events industry. With festivals and live music venues closed until further notice, artists and fans were unable to engage in their passion for Dance music.
Consequently, the company’s directors were forced to re-evaluate their existing office space. They needed to reconfigure the layout to provide enough space for social distancing in the office. Plus, a a space where they could safely welcome external visitors without putting their office staff at risk.
If they could introduce a soundproof music studio, they could continue to record podcasts and their radio show, as well as stream live performances from their artists online. This would ensure the fans were still engaged with their music while concerts and festivals were closed.
When Hospital Records contacted JBH Refurbishments, they had already decided the officed needed a full rethink. The question was: how?
The Hospital Records office in London was an open plan space featuring workspaces and an open recording studio. Towards the end of the office was a sizable WC and shower room, which was rarely utilised.
The open plan space that was once a hive of activity became impractical when Covid-19 pandemic reared its unwelcoming force. The work-from-home culture meant the company had to change their working arrangements. Furthermore, social distancing policies meant that the existing office proportions and layout were beyond practical.
Hospital Records were clear in their brief. They wanted to:
- Optimise their office layout to provide more space between desks and enable their staff to come back to work safely.
- Create a dedicated recording studio for DJs and guest artists. The studio had to be separate to the main office to prevent mixing and to provide a professional space for recording and broadcasting.
- Introduce a meeting room for flexible working and creative decision making.
Upon inspection JBH Refurbishments could see enormous potential. While there was adequate floor space it was not being used to its full capacity.
JBH Refurbishments proposed some moderate building works to remove the WC and shower room. This would provide more desk space within the main office area.
To create a bespoke studio space, JBH devised an office partitioning system that would separate the open plan office and studio, while providing a soundproof solution.
In order to retain the impression of space and natural light, the partition walls, that face the open office, would feature a mirror-effect solar vinyl. Furthermore, the partitions were specified with acoustic properties and integrated blinds to reduce the impact of increased recording and broadcasting activity on the on the office team.
Finally, the all-new meeting room was located next to the pre-existing kitchen. This would enable quick access to drinks and beverages for visitors and in-house meetings.
The Hospital Records office refurbishment London started during the late stages of the 2021 lockdown. At that time, it was still unclear whether restrictions would be eased. Not ones to take any chances, the Directors at Hospital Records continued with their plans for Covid-safe office refurbishment.
The construction and project management team at JBH took every precaution to ensure Covid-19 guidelines were followed. Wearing masks, testing and frequent sanitation have been routine measures for us since the pandemic began, and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.
The fit out itself was very straight forward. The team at JBH completed the strip out of the WC and shower room and made good the area, followed by full decoration.
The glass office partitions were installed to create the studio. These featured integrated blind for privacy when required. To finish, the mirror-effect solar vinyl was seamlessly fitted to the office facia. Inside and around the studio JBH decorated the area in trade white paint.
Next came the meeting room. Glass office partitioning was installed, encasing one corner of the office. The glass was finished with a frosted vinyl featuring Hospital Record’s iconic logo and its successive brands.
The Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent work-from-home policy forced us to re-evaluate our office use. After consultation with our team, we took the decision to make changes to the space, making it more suitable for flexible working and creative decision making.
JBH refurbishments were brought in to complete the following projects for the company:
- Installation of a single glazed meeting room
- Installation of a soundproof double glazed streaming & performance room.
- Removal of a W/C Area, replacing with more desk space.
Callum (Project Manager) was an excellent communicator, delivering the project on time, within budget and to a very high standard. We are extremely pleased with the results and looking forward to using the new spaces they have created.
We would highly recommend JBH refurbishments and will definitely be using them again.
