Nestled in the surrounding countryside of Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge is the village of Bidborough, where lies Bidborough Primary School. With just over 200 pupils, this relatively small Church of England School contacted JBH Refurbishments to update their cluttered and dated office and reception area.

Located in the newest part of the school building – circa 1960s/70s – the reception area was cramped and cluttered. Freestanding storage units, drawers and desks did not present an efficient use of the compact space.

Our challenge was to redesign the area to create as much storage as possible by relocating the door position and installing a new sliding hatch for greeting visitors.

Transforming a compact area into an ergonomic workspace is one of the most rewarding parts of our job. It was clear that storage and decluttering was the fundamental purpose of this refurbishment. So, we started there.

We began the refurbishment by clearing the space of all the existing storage units and furniture. We removed the carpet, door, and glazed hatch.

By reducing the number of external openings (the door and the hatch) we were able to create a layout that presented more uninterrupted wall space. The extra wall area would later be used for floor to ceiling storage. To create the new layout, the door and the hatch were relocated to one end of the reception.

Being such a small area, it was important that we gave the impression of space using the décor, lighting, and of course the furnishings. The chosen design scheme was bright white throughout, with accents of grey, using the carpet tiles and chrome ironmongery.

Prior to the school office refurbishment, the reception staff at Bidborough Primary had two individual desks that could only seat two staff at a time. This was teamed with the typical brown plastic school chairs – the stackable kind – which are not designed for desk work!

To give the staff more workspace, we replaced the old desks with one long bench-style desk that ran from wall-to-wall in front of the window. By optimising the space in this way, we created enough extra desk space to seat an additional staff member.

Finally, the desks were complemented with three comfortable office chairs to replace those plastic stackable seats. It must have been a welcome change to staff at Bidborough’s school office, who will be breathing a sigh of relief!

The storage in this compact office refurbishment had to be maximised to the room’s full potential making the most of the new layout. Therefore, across the two available walls we installed floor to ceiling cupboards. No part of the available wall was left unfurnished; we fit narrow cupboards where the full width cupboards did not fill, and shelving into the corners.

The only area of the wall left without fitted units was the space for the printer. Here, we provided a white lockable file unit.

Aside from the obvious furnishing and decoration, we fitted new cable trunking, skirtings, a fire door with lock and a new glazed hatch for greeting visitors.

We couldn’t be more delighted to hand over this project to the office staff at Bidborough Primary School, knowing that it will make all the difference to their work life. Although, it remains a compact space, it is now a light, bright and ergonomic workspace, with plenty of storage.

The summer holidays are the season of school toilet refurbishment projects in Kent and London. Among other common areas of a school, the toilets receive the highest footfall and therefore undergo the most wear and tear. As a result, schools across Kent and London contact JBH Refurbishments to spruce up their tired washrooms throughout the months of July, August and early September.

Post lockdown the demand for school toilet refurbishments accelerated. For good reason too. Due to the pandemic, Schools are constantly looking for ways to improve hygiene. Thus, preventing further spread of Covid-19 and other seasonal illnesses.

The school washroom is notorious for harbouring nasty bacteria that can be transmitted from one person to another. That’s why one primary school in Maidstone, Kent was determined to create washrooms for their students that would optimise hygiene levels for cleaning and personal care.

Here’s how JBH Refurbishments transformed the school washrooms at St Michael’s Church of England Infant School on Douglas Road in Maidstone, Kent.

St Michael’s CoE Infant school is steeped in history. Built in 1872, it has all the classic Victorian architecture that you would expect of a school of its era. However, its modern facilities are constantly being reviewed to ensure they offer the best possible education in a healthy and pleasant environment.

As a school refurbishment contractor in Kent, London, Surrey and Sussex, JBH Refurbishments was an obvious choice to carry out the work.

Upon the initial site survey we viewed two washrooms – one male and one female. They were very dated and very tired. In the male washroom the stainless-steel urinals were odorous and unhygienic. The school was clear, the urinals had to go! This meant we had to make some minor changes to the layout. Aside from that, the school simply requested modern, hygienic, and vibrant washrooms that would be suitable for their infant students.

The school toilet refurbishment required a modern and sleek design. There was no room for stereotypical pinks and blues here. This is a school with contemporary facilities and values.

As a result, the team at JBH Refurbishments created a gender-neutral washroom design with contrasting colours; orange and green. To break up the bold colours, we introduced accents of grey and white.

The walls in school washrooms need protection from water, scuffs and scraps. Fortunately, JBH Refurbishments is an approved installer of Hygienic Cladding. This is a tough, impervious surface that comes in large sheet form and can be fitted to walls with specialist moulding equipment to reduce seams where dirt and bacteria can build up. Thus, increasing the life span of the washroom walls and improving the overall hygiene.

Traditionally, schools have used tiles on the walls and floors in their washrooms. But, the small grout crevasses are not easy to clean, meaning a lot of the grim gets left behind. Hygienic cladding however, covers a large area without multiple joints. One straight seam now and again (depending on the area size) is covered with a purpose-made strip. This drastically reduces areas where dirt can build up.

Due to its impervious surface, Hygienic Cladding can be cleaned with strong detergents and remain in excellent condition. When used from floor to ceiling, the entire washroom can be frequently cleaned. 

Hygienic Cladding comes in multiple colours and patterns. So, we were able to introduce the orange accents on the walls in the female washrooms. While in the male toilets we used the contrasting green.

As well as Hygienic Cladding, we also recommend the use of IPS (Integrated Panel Systems) units behind the toilets. These units hide the toilet cistern and encase the pipework, making it easier to clean around the toilet and the floor.

For St Michael’s CoE Infant School, we used the IPS units to introduce the neutral grey and the contrasting colour to the walls from the initial design. For instance, the female washroom walls were clad in green, so the IPS units were orange, and vice versa for the male toilets.

The toilet cubicles and vanity unit mirrored the colours from the IPS units in each washroom to continue the bold design.

Again, the water-resistant surfaces of these products enables the use of detergents, making cleaning easy and effective.

Remember we mentioned the old and fragrant urinals? Well, they were removed and replaced with individual toilets. The use of urinals is becoming less desirable in schools these days. Neither do they encourage hygienic habits, nor privacy. Therefore, the latest trend is to remove them entirely. The individual toilet cubicle is far more fitting of today’s school culture.

Back to the vanity units now. We fitted trough-style sinks with non-concussive taps, which automatically switch off between use. These remain a more affordable option to sensor taps, and still provide the water-saving function.

Considering this was a school toilet refurbishment intended to improve hygiene, we couldn’t forget the floor. Therefore, we used a hard-wearing, non-slip vinyl.

We advised against regular skirting because you cannot effectively clean up to the floor edge. Instead, we used a cap and cove fitting, which gently curves the floor vinyl up to the wall, where it is fixed into place. As a result the floor has been optimised for thorough cleaning.

The school toilet refurbishment at St Michael’s CoE Infant school has been transformed into a bright and easy-to-clean space that the pupils can enjoy.

JBH Refurbishments was contracted by Eagle House Group to complete the school refurbishment for their new facility, ‘Bramley’ in Tadworth, Surrey. Having used JBH Refurbishments before, the school’s management were confident that JBH was the ideal fit out contractor for the job in hand.

However, this was no simple interior fit out, this was a school refurbishments project that demanded extensive interior and exterior renovations. Once complete, the property would provide a comfortable and inspiring space, where Eagle House Group could provide a “highly specialised therapeutic provision” for 36 children, aged 5-16 with autism and additional specialist needs.

Eagle House Group offers specialist primary, secondary and sixth form education for children with autism and additional needs. Founded by Julia Pithouse in 2004, with the sole intention to provide support for autistic children and their families, Eagle House Group now occupies four sites within the vicinity of South London and Surrey.

Eagle House Group’s school sites present a combination of indoor and outdoor learning spaces for group and one-to-one teaching for children aged five through to sixth form education. The latest site opened by the Group is in Tadworth, Surrey and is known at Eagle House Group (Bramley). JBH Refurbishments was selected at the fit out contractor for the project.

This was not the first project for Eagle House Group that JBH Refurbishments was contracted to complete. Last year, JBH was the fit out contractor of choice for the development of Strawberry Lodge Sixth Form Centre in Charshalton, Sutton, which opened in September 2018.

Eagle House Group was delighted with the project and were quick to secure a competitive quotation for their next site in Surrey. JBH Refurbishments came up trumps and began work on the run-down property property in May 2019.

The Tadworth property was an old house that over the years had been heavily extended as an education facility. It had been left abandoned for some time and the condition of the property was very poor. Inside there were collapsed ceilings, the walls needed extensive repair, the drainage needed attention and there was evidence of asbestos throughout the premises.

The proposed interior and exterior refurbishment was extensive, yet the end result would provide a spacious learning centre with facilities that could also benefit the surrounding community.

Central to the property was the main house, which spanned two floors and featured 16 rooms (8 on each level). The additional buildings included:

• An art block with three rooms
• Primary block with six rooms, a lobby and two washrooms
• Dining hall and kitchen
• Sports hall

Once complete the school building and outdoor grounds would offer a wide range of facilities to enhance their learning environment at Eagle House Group (Bramley), including:

• Art therapy room
• Sensory room
• IT suite
• Music room
• Science lab
• Individual workspaces
• Communal dining room
• Gym
• Outdoor play area
• Multi use games area
• Large sports field

The JBH Refurbishments team began the school refurbishment project with a complete strip out of the existing flooring, collapsed ceilings, washrooms, electrics and external fittings and fixtures that were no longer required. Specialists were called in to safely remove the asbestos that was present throughout the building.

Once the strip out was complete, work commenced on the interior fit out. Throughout the property, the damaged walls were over boarded and plastered, the suspended ceilings were replaced. LED lux panel lighting was neatly installed to provide ample light within the classrooms.

On the stairs of the main building, the upper banisters were removed and replaced with a jumbo partition wall. The wall facilitated an enclosed stairwell with aluminium banisters on each side of the stairs.

The flooring was replaced throughout the building with a combination of commercial carpet and vinyl.

The electrical installation included the provision of the IT suites and digital learning equipment.

In the various external buildings, JBH installed skylights with aluminium frames to let in plenty of natural light.

Perhaps the most challenging aspects of the school’s interior fit out was the DA toilet and shower room. To accommodate the DA shower, the shower tray needed to be flush with the floor for easy wheelchair access. As a result, the floor needed to be dug out to be made lower, and new waste pipes installed to ensure the floor areas was fully flat. Once complete, the floor was finished with a waterproof grey vinyl.

The remaining washrooms were fitted with new toilets, blue and cream full height cubicles, coordinating vanity units and IPS panelling to conceal the cisterns.

The JBH team installed two tea points as part of the school refurbishment. These comprised gloss white units and worktops.

In the kitchen, the existing units and work surfaces were in good condition, so JBH Refurbishments simply ensured the ventilation was compliant with gas safety.

The cafeteria is set in the large outbuilding with exposed beams within the ceiling. In here, The JBH Refurbishments team fully redecorated the area, installed new lighting and vinyl flooring. The resultis a large bright and open seating area for communal dining that can be extended as required thanks to the cosortina wall partition.

Outside, the building was in much need of a facelift and required disabled access ramps to the various outbuildings. The exterior refurbishment included:

• Decoration of the external walls of all the building
• Installation of wheelchair access ramps
• Replacement external cladding
• Groundworks for external first fix electrical cabling to power the electric security gates

The school refurbishment for Eagle House Group was completed in 17 weeks to meet the September opening deadline.

JBH was assigned the London school refurbishment contract to redevelop an extended period property for Eagle House Group Sixth Form Centre in South London.

Eagle House Group Sixth Form required a dedicated space to support their students, who have individual learning needs. When a period property dating back to the 17^th century came available within a stone’s throw of the main school, the Eagle House Group seized the opportunity to transform the building into a contemporary sixth form centre for their students.

Named Strawberry Lodge, the property is based in Carshalton, Sutton, South London. It was built in 1685 by clothworker, Josias Dewyn. From the outside, this beautiful property is perfectly asymmetric with bay windows either side of a central entrance door. In recent years Strawberry Lodge received a modern addition to accommodate a kitchen, large hall, washrooms and meeting room.

In the past, Strawberry Lodge has had multiple residents. It has been a meeting room and conference centre, as well as an NHS clinic.

When the Eagle House Group took the period property over, the entire building needed a full refurbishment. They were quick to assign JBH Refurbishments as their school refurbishment contractor. The JBH team were delighted to get involved in redeveloping this historic building for its new residents.

On initial inspection, it was clear that the main property and its modern extension needed a lot of attention. The décor, carpets, kitchen and washrooms were tired and dated. This soon-to-be school building needed a full strip out and fit out.

With a looming September deadline, JBH devised a schedule that would ensure the school refurbishment would be completed on time and within budget.

Pulling out all the stops, JBH started work onsite to refurbish four classrooms, three toilets and a shower room, kitchen, café, reception, entrance, hallway, stairs, office and meeting room.

Let’s take a look at the school refurbishment room by room…

The large bright rooms within the old Strawberry Lodge building presented the ideal space for four classrooms. Each received a fresh coat of paint on the walls, ceilings, coving, wooden window frames and the architraves. Special care was taken to refresh a beautiful carved full height fireplace, which was an original from the 17^th century.

Typical of the period, the sash windows in each classroom offered an abundance of natural light. However, there was still a requirement to upgrade the ceiling lights in all four classrooms with contemporary LED light panels.

To complete the classrooms and communal stairwell, JBH replaced the flooring throughout.

The new look offered a fresh new space for learning, that all the new student could enjoy.

The kitchen and café were located in the new part of the building, next to a large hall, used for sporting activities and theatre productions, and a mezzanine floor that lead to a large meeting room. This spacious facility featured high ceilings and full height windows.

Although it was a new addition to the property, the kitchen and café needed a full refurbishment. Following the strip-out and making good process, JBH redecorated throughout using a combination of dove grey and white paint.

The kitchen was transformed into a light and bright space where students and teachers could prepare food and beverages. It was important to keep this area open to encourage student participation and independence.

JBH installed new kitchen appliances, including two new cookers with extraction hoods, dishwasher, fridge and freezer.

White units and worktops were combined with bright splash backs in the colours of the school logo and white hygienic cladding for optimum hygiene.

The windows were finished with a frosted vinyl to disguise the unsightly utilities outside of the property. Finally, a new non slip floor was fitted with a cap and cove system for ease of cleaning.

The café is undoubtedly the hub of this school, somewhere students can take time out to relax between lessons. The new bright kitchen, fresh décor and stylised seating area is the perfect chill-out space for the students at Eagle House Group Sixth Form Centre.

The mezzanine floor above the café, kitchen and hall has a large room with views over the ground floor level. Here, the school decided would be the ideal place for a meeting room. JBH stripped out the old flooring and redecorated throughout. Window film was fitted to the lower windows for privacy.

There were four washrooms at Strawberry Lodge, including a shower room that required extensive refurbishment.

The existing fixtures in the Ladies, Gents and DDA toilets were removed and replacing the toilets, basins and flooring. New cubicles were installed with colour co-ordinated cistern wall panelling, vanity units and upstands.

White hygienic cladding was fitted above the vanity units to protect the walls from splashes. All exposed pipework was disguised with white trunking and the windows were finished with a frost vinyl to finish the look.

In the shower room, JBH fitted a new shower and hygienic cladding on the walls. Hygienic cladding provides an impervious surface that is far easier to clean than traditional bathroom tiles.

JBH created a new office by installing a stud wall. Electrics were installed to operate the light switch and the room was fully decorated. The reception and entrance were also redecorated with dove grey paint, new flooring and the ceilings were repaired.

The adjoining corridors and staircases received a facelift too, with new flooring and decoration. In the period house, the ornate balustrade was carefully painted to retain its original features.

Strawberry Lodge has been transformed into a light, bright and all-new learning space for Eagle House Group Sixth Form Centre.

“Having a fresh environment to learn can only have a positive impact of these young adult’s lives. The simple use of colour and the abundance of natural light in both properties is exceptional,” explains Jason Hubbard, MD of JBH Refurbishments.

The London School Refurbishment was completed on time and on budget as promised. The time scale for completion was just seven weeks. As a result, Eagle House Group Sixth Form Centre opened in September as planned and welcomed the first students to Strawberry Lodge.

Schools are changing. Not just in terms of the way they teach, but their entire dynamics are becoming more inline with the modern world to prepare young people for life as an adult.

One pioneering school in Stratford, East London is leading the way. This modern school teaches children from age 4 to young adults up to the age of 18, from all backgrounds.

Due to the versatile nature and ethos of the school, the building itself plays a valuable role in the teaching methods. This modern London school was built in 2012 and boasts some incredible open plan and flexible learning spaces, as well as traditional enclosed classrooms.

The London school is constantly evolving to suit its staff and pupils, so when there was a clear requirement for additional rooms, the school contacted JBH Refurbishments.

As a fit-out company that understands the nature of school refurbishments and school requirements, JBH was selected to design and complete the fit out of the head teacher’s office, a staff meeting room, a small classroom, general office and learning zones.

Situated above a large open plan hall/learning space, the school’s spacious, first floor corridor posed the ideal location to create two new offices. Not only did the corridor offer ample space, the new rooms would provide acoustic sound proofing to the hall below.

The London school also required:

• A large classroom on the ground floor to be partitioned into a smaller classroom and office space
• Various recesses within the open plan hall to be sectioned off with glazed partitioning and doors

Before any work could commence on site, the layout and positioning of the classroom and office fit out had to be meticulously planned. Upon assessment the JBH interior design team created several 3D CAD visuals. This would ensure the fit-out offered an efficient use of the space and met the head teacher’s vision.

Once the layout was agreed, the team researched suitable partitioning materials that would act as a sound barrier inside and out side of the new rooms.

The average classroom creates up to 60-70 RdB, so acoustic sound barriers play an important role in the overall school building. Sound panels are often advised as the solution, especially in large open plan spaces. However, they only reduce reverberations between 2-6 RdB, which is the equivalent of a rustle of leaves. Obviously, this is not enough for a school. Therefore, the acoustics were a key consideration in this school refurbishment.

Reverberations in open plan spaces can be difficult to control. Fortunately, in this situation the space was being divided. The best solution was to use two layers of sound block partitioning from first floor level, right up to ceiling height.

Standard partitioning offers 45 RdB sound absorption, which is the sound level comparable to a quiet office. The thick double-layer partitioning used in the school refurbishment London absorbed 48RdB, making a significant difference. To provide natural light, we used two sheets of 6mm glass to create a double glazed unit in the headteachers office and staff meeting room, which helped enhance the sound quality further.

The combination of double layer sound block partitioning and thick glazing meant the reverberation in the new rooms could be suitably absorbed. Furthermore, the new rooms now act as a practical sound barrier between the open plan hall below and the corridors. The additions have made a significant impact on the sound quality in the hall, neighbouring classrooms and the corridor.

As a result, the sound quality is much cleaner and crisper in these areas, making teaching and learning far more effective for the pupils at this South-East London School.

Further work to address the sound quality took place in the main hall/open plan learning space. The JBH Refurbishments team installed 10mm thick toughened glazed partitioning and doors to the recesses within the hall. Consequently, the once redundant recesses are now a practical learning space for the pupils and teachers.

With the partitioned walls constructed, the fit out of the  new classroom and offices could commence. The classroom and office fit out involved:

• First and second fix electrics, including lighting and sockets
• Data cabling and dado rail installation
• Wall mounted air conditioning system and condenser by Mitsubishi Electric
• Decoration of the walls with trade matt white emulsion, white gloss skirting and door frames

The efficient use of space meant the hall’s open plan layout has not been affected by the addition of two new offices on the first floor. In-fact the use of acoustic office partitioning has enhanced the area and the surrounding classrooms. The school refurbishment was achieved in just six weeks, thanks to the efficient project managers and engineers at JBH Refurbishments.

Cornwallis Academy in Maidstone, Kent opened in 2011, at which time the school became part of the Future Learning Trust.  This new school building replaced the original structure that dated back to 1959. While the old school was demolished, it was replaced by several state-of the- art buildings that now house some of the latest learning technology and school facilities.

Like many new academies and schools, Cornwallis featured a large open plan learning environment, which could accommodate multiple classes at once.  However, this summer the Maidstone school decided it was time to adapt the open plan area and contacted JBH Refurbishments for advice.

The management team at Cornwallis Academy wanted to divide the open plan area in to three smaller individual classrooms and a substantial corridor that would withstand the numbers of pupils passing through the halls each day.

JBH needed to partition the four new sections with stud wall partitioning. While the overall project was very straightforward, there were a few major factors that our Project Management team had to consider.

First was the ceiling height. The open plan space at Cornwallis Academy was not only vast in it floor square footage, but the ceiling was double height and measured six metres tall. When you take in to account that a single height ceiling at Cornwallis is much higher than a standard commercial property, this was not a typical partitioning project.

Second was the sound reverberations. In large spaces with high ceilings, sound reverberations can prove problematic, especially in a classroom, where noise levels can be an issue, especially during group work. It was important that the new classrooms were practical and that involved ensuring the teachers could be heard clearly to create an effective learning environment.

The JBH Refurbishments team did not take these factors lightly. After much research, they addressed the ceiling height by opting for ‘jumbo’ partitioning and a stud framework formed the basis of the large walls. The ‘jumbo’ partitioning comprised two skins of plasterboard to reinforce the unusually tall walls.

To address the noise reverberations within the classroom environment, the ‘jumbo’ partitioning panels featured acoustic properties that would help absorb echo within the room.

Being a school that boasts state-of-the art equipment and technology, a sufficient power supply in each new classroom and the hall was a must.

Simultaneous to the partition wall construction, the first fix electrical installation was underway. Our team of electrical engineers integrated electrical and data cabling to the partition walls and fused spurs were fitted for the electronic door entry.

There were 18 new LED ceiling lights with LED panels that required power, so the cabling needed to run the full length of the ‘jumbo’ walls through to the suspended ceiling.

The LED lighting system replicates natural light. This is ideal within environments where a natural light source is scarce, which was precisely the situation with the new classroom fit outs at Cornwallis Academy. JBH Refurbishments customised the LED lighting system to provide a simple switch for ease of use.

For the second electrical fix, double electric and data sockets were installed on the ‘jumbo’ walls for connection to the school’s IT system.

Once the construction work and electrical installation was complete, the walls were decorated in the traditional magnolia, the skirtings and carpentry work were glossed and oak veneer fire doors were fitted.

The classroom fit out took place during the summer holidays, which was ideal for a project of this size. JBH Refurbishments completed the project in just over five weeks, which included some time for cleaning the area.

Work is well and truly underway at this primary school in London to completely refurbish four classrooms.

The JBH team is working to complete each classroom refurbishment in just 3.5 weeks and is on target, with one already finished and the next is in the process.

Each classroom  will undergo a complete strip-out of the flooring and walls. We then start from scratch to:

• Fit new insulated plasterboard walls, with tape and jointing
• Adapt, repair or replace the existing suspended ceiling
• Install new oak veneer doors
• Fit skylights within the pitched roof to bring much needed natural light in to the classroom

To complete the look the walls are being decorated in a bright white paint. This will create a gallery-inspired theme and act as a blank canvas for the children’s artwork. Not only will it inspire the children to be creative, but it will enable each class to make their classroom their own.
